Dave's Report - August 15, 2007

Trans Rockies Bike Race.


 
On Sunday 12th the Trans Rockies Race started from Panorama Resort.  They are doing it in reverse this year and ending in Fernie.   Because of the fire danger, the stage into the Crows Nest Pass had to be cancelled, and two stages ended at Nipika Resort.  How time flies when you are having fun, as it is now in it's 6th year.  With over 300 teams consisting of 2 people in each team it was a huge event.  The weather was superb and the "start" was seen off by a large  and enthusiastic crowd.  By all standards this is a grueling event with each days riding anywhere from 4 to 10 hrs. 



 
Fernie has quite a strong group of riders this year.  Todd Loewan, Sean Staplin, Arthur Sombrowski, Brendan Morgan, Pat Gilmar, Ron Clark, John O'Shannassy, Brad Pochay, and Derek and Heidi Berry.  Having been at the end of the first two stages, to even get over those mountains in one piece is quite an effort.  On the first stage there was a 40 min hike a bike, which in effect means that even the super humans that are currently in first place, had to take their bikes for a walk !
